Can Implanon birth control cause dyspareunia(painful intercourse)?

I am 23, I had my first and only child in 2008. About 6 months after I had him I got on birth control and have been on it ever since. I have been on Nuvaring, Low-estren, Depo shot, and in January of this year I got Implanon inserted in my arm. I have been dealing with painful intercourse pretty much since I have had my son, and am at my wits end! It has gotten a lot worse lately, and I have been to the doctor numerous times and they cannot find anything wrong or give me any answers. I know it is not vaginismus, to describe the pain, it feels like my tissues are just really sensitive and any friction irritates them for days, its very painful, burning, I do have some problems with not creating enough lubrication myself, but even when I use lubricant products it does not help, I also have a low sex drive. I never used to have these issues and I am not sure if it is caused from me having my son, or from the birth control. I am contemplating getting the implanon taken out just to see if this is what is causing the problem, but I just wanted to see if maybe anyone else was having this problem, or if I really need to have it taken out.

Hi, I'm only 18 I've had the implanon in for about 3 years now. I got it when I was 15 because I had a boyfriend at the time and I was really scared of getting pregnant, I've notice recently when I had sex and it was uncomfortable I thought maybe it was the guy. But now that I have read other people's comment and experiences I've realized I have the same problems. I'm planning on getting it out asap I no longer what it (it scares me). Now that I know it causes this so called dryness I'm scared that I have to deal with the pain for the reason of my life and I'm scared. Please let me know if it goes away!?

I posted in the wrong place before. Has anyone found any answers? In the same situation won't bore you with exactly the same sorry tale. Have seen more Drs than I've had boyfriends.. now have lidocaine internal anaesthetic which takes away all feeling but bleeding and "bruised" feeling remains for days. Had internal ultrasound, external ultrasound, smear, bloods, samples.... Nothing. implant out 4 months ago, no improvement.

Has anyone got any updates or ideas?

i have had implanon for 2 years now it is supposed to come out in December of 2015. at first i didn't experience any problems until about a year in. i noticed within the first few months i stopped getting periods and for about a year i did not have one period. about 8 months ago i started to get them again after wishing for months i would since i felt bitchy from not having them. when i first got the birth control i was dating someone else and with him i never had an issue with my self lubricating, or my sex drive, when i got with my current boyfriend about 6 months into our relationship i started to notice that sex would hurt very badly to the point we wouldn't be able to finish it felt as if my walls were being scraped and i felt a burning feeling. its been almost 2 years with this guy and im still experiencing a low sex drive and i cannot self lubricate. ive experienced a lot of changes in my body since i got the birth control. odd period cycles, painful sex, lack of lubrication, and little to no sex drive. implanon definetly works and i would recommend it, but i don't think i will be keeping it for the remaining 10 months. i am scared that i have gotten pregnant from it and lost the baby before even knowing. does anyone else have these issues?

I am 27 and you girls need to be careful. I had implanon for 3 years and got it removed to get tubes tied. Sex was painful and sex drive was gone. But after it was removed it didn't get better. AtI had random severe abdominal pains and stabbing pains after sex, after two years I had a hysterectomy. My pap smears were normal and Even had a uterine biopsy that came back normal, it wasn't until after my pathology report came back that I found out I had severe cervical dysplasia and myometrium adenomyosis, Getting my hysterectomy saved my life, Pay attention to your bodies, know that pain is our bodies way of telling us something is wrong.

WE HAVE THE SAME EXACT ISSUE!! AND SITUATION!! IVE BEEN ON VARIOUS BC BEFORE AND NEVER HAD ANY ISSUES LIKE THIS! I had my son through c-section so I just thought the pain was coming from that traumatic experience with my body trying to adjust... but no... its almost been 18 months since my son was born... I got the implanon a month after birth and in the first 6 months it bend into my muscle so I had it removed and a new one replaced in my other arm.... well after having a constant period for a year its finally gone away completely. But sex is completely off the table due to how painful it is now.... like you said its like the texture and friction of sex is just so irritatingly painful I cant go 5 minute and ive had issues with lubrication as well but we use tons of lube and it still feels like having sex with sand paper.. it stings, and everything feels hot and swollen after....SUPER IRRITATED! ! FOR DAYS!!! Its effected our relationship so much. ... I never want to have sex. .. ever. .. my sex drive its completely diminished. .. i have no idea what to do at this point!!!! Neither of us have any stds or issues. Weve been tested and weve gotten no answers on anything. ..

Hi, I just wanted to say that I have had the implanon for a little over 2 years. I have a lot of the same problems you have. I do not have a kid, But It hurts during sex, Like its sore. I don't create any natural lubrication, I don't have a high sex drive at all!! Another thing is that even when I do use lubrication, it still hurts. I also have been to the doctor about this and all they tell me is that Im too young for vaginal dryness and to use lubrication. so i started using lubrication and it does not help. I have read many other women's stories on other sites and a lot of people on implanon seem to have this problem. And on the side effects page of implanon, it is a COMMON side effect.

Hi,
Thanks so much for the reply! And as far as testing, my doctor performed a routine exam and papsmere and told me that nothing was anatomically wrong with me. I have been doing some research and found out that Implanon works by stopping release of the egg, and also changes the mucous in the cervix and the lining of the uterus. So this made me wonder, if its making changes to the lining of my uterus wouldn't it be changing my vaginal tissue as well? This could explain the sensitivity and the burning. I have decided to talk with my doctor and switch to an alternative birth control that works in a different way. I really hope that fixes the problem, but I will keep you posted. Thanks so much for the input, its good to know I am not alone!

I'm just wondering after you switched birth controls if the pain during sex went away? Please answer? Thank you!
