i had labs drawn last week whcih showed low levels of folic acid. my period is also 9 days late and i was wondering if the folic acid levels could have an affect on that. i have not had sex since my last period so pregnancy is less likely. i have however been under an obscene amount of stress.

Hello amby31,
No, low levels of folic acid do not effect the menstrual cycle. Folic acid deficiency can cause poor growth, tongue inflammation, gingivitis, loss of appetite, shortness of breath, diarrhea, irritability, forgetfulness, and mental sluggishness.

However, excessive stress can delay the start of a menstrual period. Eliminating the stress in your life usually will cause your menstruation to resume.

Always discuss your concerns with your private physician.
