Q:

Can my parents request a DNA test on my baby once it is born if I say no and I'm under 18 years old?

I had sex and suspect that I may be pregnant. I'm only 15 years old and the boy I had sex with doesn't want anyone knowing that the baby is his. I agree with him. If I'm under 18, can I say no to the DNA test if my parents want one?

Guide

Hello Anonymous,

This is a very difficult question for me to answer.

First, I think you need to determine if you are pregnant or not. Wait for your next period. If you miss your period, you need to be honest with your mother. You will need to take a pregnancy test.

If you get your period, you are not pregnant.

You are a minor and considered your parents' dependent.

Depending on the regulations of your home state, your parents may have the right to request a DNA test. This is a matter best handled by the social service department at your local hospital. This would be relevant if a postpartum testing is requested.

DNA paternity testing while pregnant is done less often. In this case, a staff member of your healthcare provider's office may know what rights you and your parents have.
