Q:

Can Next Choice delay your period yet cause no side effects?

My boyfriend and I had sex on Saturday, and it was not until he pulled out that we realized the condom had a tear it in. Not by much, but enough that some may have gotten inside. Seven hours after it happened, I began taking Next Choice. My period was supposed to come this week, today, Wednesday, and it has not come. I have also had no side effects either. Does this mean that the medication has not worked yet? Also, how long can your period be delayed? Since my period was so close to the time of the accident, I don't believe I was fertile at all so that's one positive. I know it has only been 3 days since taking next choice, but I'd just like to be certain that everything is going to be okay.

So me and my bf had sex and condom broke, I took next choice a few hours later. About 5 hours later after my first pill me and my bf had sex again. So we thought condom broke but really we checked and it didn't seem to be broken. But I had come in me. So is it my come or his? But I did see the condom there wasn't much come of his in there. But we checked there weren't any holes, is it possible for the hole to be there. So I'm just really really worried right now. Will the next choice pill help that I took before I had sex just in case if I did get it in me and on top of that I take my second pill in a few hours which I did. So I don't know will this help.

Hi Anonymous,

You can expect to have irregular periods for the next two cycles so wondering if you are pregnant based on your regular start date probably won't be the best solution. If you are concerned, take a pregnancy test. The itching that you are experiencing could be a yeast infection. Are you having any other signs of yeast such as cottage cheese looking discharge or burning sensations? Since you had sex without a condom, you should always follow up with your physician about possible STDs also.

Good luck,

Missie

Thanks for responding...there's no discharge other than the spotting but it itches and burns especially when I go to the bathroom. I don't have health insurance and no doctor but I am going to the health clinic here tomorrow to test for stds. I did also use soap on the area after I had sex I don't know if that's the cause but iamreally worried that it could be something I got from the guy I was with..

My last period started on March 20th which was my birthday. My period is usually on time, either 28 or 30. I had sex this past late Monday night/ early Tuesday morning and my friend didn't wear a condom even though I asked him to. He didnt ejaculate in me but I was still worried. I went and got next choice about twelve hours later and took the first pill then the second twelve hours later. I read that this can affect your period but I still had hopes that it will still start on time. Well April 20th, I woke up and notice an itching sensation down there. It lasted all day and it's still itching today. I also noticed a little brown spotting yesterday and today. But I haven't started my period....I'm starting to worry that I may be pregnant...I'm not sure why I started itching the day my period should have came. I don't know if it's from the next choice or something else...I'm really scared.

Hi Anonymous,

Thank you for your question. If you took the pill within 72 hours from the sexual incident, you should be fine. However, you should expect irregular periods for the next two cycles. This is very common after taking the morning after pill. I hope this helps and good luck.

Hi, my boyfriend and I where ( unfortunately) messing around without protection due to my latex allergy and lack of funding for birthcontrol, on saturday the 7th in the late afternoon. It was considered our first time, even though he did not cum inside ( and i know the pre stuff can cause pregnancy). He took me to get next choice on monday morning, and now Im just wondering If i will be alright. My period is supposed to come sometime next week towards the end, and i have had some...not very many, side effects to the pill and Im just a little concerned that something might have happened...even though we didn't do very much for a long time, and there was no ejaculation. i also took both pills at the same time incase i forgot .

Hi. I had unprotected on tuesday April 3rd and took the next choice pill wednesday april 4th, but Thursday April 5th i had unprotected sex again. I was supposed to start my period today Wednesday april 8, but have not had any symptoms to start my period. Is there a possibility that i could be pregnant or what? I also read that if i have not started my period within a week of taking the pill that i am most likely pregnant. Is that true?

Hi Anonymous,

Thank you for your question. As you explained, you had side effects before from taking Next choice so assume you will have side effects again. If your start date for your period was March 26th, I think you can be safe to say that you are probably not pregnant as the pregnancy test suggested. You could always try another one next week to be safe in case you do not start your period and therefore, you can rely on just the after effect of the Pill.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Hi. I had unprotected sex 2 weeks ago thursday. I took the first next choice pill that day but forgot to take the second pill since 12 hrs later it was 3 a.m. I was supposed to start my period last tuesday, March 26. I still haven't gotten my period. I have taken next choice once before (summer of 2011). It did delay my period, but not for this long. I took a pregnancy test Wednesday, April 4, and it came out negative. Is it possibile that I could be pregnant? I know you can get pregnant any time between periods depending on when you ovulate, but it was so close to my start date I would think it would be a very low chance? Do I need to wait another week and take a test if I haven't started yet or is it just a side effect of taking next choice? Also I haven't had any other side effects of next choice.
