My partner and I want to have a baby, I know about working out when your ovulating etc. What I need is clarification, about a week before I bleed I always stain dark brown do I take this as day 1 of my period or the day that I actually bleed as day 1. Obviously this would help then I could work out when Im ovulating. Help!!!!!

Hi star78,
That is a tough question with no exact answer, since it depends on your specific body (that we do not know)! The best answer: if you spot for just one day, and then there is no other spotting or bleeding for a week until you have an actual period that lasts longer with more "flow", than I would count the one day of spotting as "breakthrough bleeding" and NOT count it as "day 1". I assume you are not using any type of hormonal contraception?
Also, if you and your partner are just starting out, most experts are telling women (with no prior history of reproductive conditions) to just have frequent, unprotected sex...regardless of the timing of your cycle. Women with even the most regular cycles can ovulate on different days, and having sex 2-4 times per week will "hit" any possible ovulation days.
Good luck!

Hi Alison
No im not on any contraception i came off the pill 4 months ago and i have no reproductive conditions I have a 10yr old and just feel the time is right to have another child. My staining actually lasts for a week and then i bleed for about 4 days. Thanks for your advice.

Thanks for letting us know.
You spot lightly for 7 days, then have a heavier flow for 4 days...let us see what our experts would say about when your period would actually start as "day 1". I have seen some other women ask this question, and will try to find this discussion thread as well.
