ask: Can SSRI's anti-depressants like Prozac, Wellbutrin, Zoloft inhibit your thyroid?

Just read an article saying it can slow down the thyroid which can cause weight gain and further depression . Is that true?? Also birth control pills??

Hi Anon

Most anti-depression pills should not affect your birth control pill but some can, especially something like St. John's Wort which is an herbal remedy. You need to check with your doctor.

With regard to your thyroid, from what I can gather, there have been no provable links that SSRIs affect people with thyroid problems or who have no thyroid problems at all. You can read the study here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19583486

However, having thyroid conditions can be linked to depression - thyroid conditions can cause or at least contribute to depression.

I hope this helps!
