Q:

Can the toenail on a big toe grow back after coming off?

Ran a marathon and a few months after, half of the nail started to lift and detach itself from the toe. I didn't know what to do at the time and thought if I took it off it would grow back no problem... eventually the rest of the toenail came off and the keratin (I believe is what it's called) grew thick in its place and the nail still hasn't grown back. It's been about 6 years. I'm afraid the reality is that it will never grow back now. Am I right or is there hope still??

Guide

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER.

After a nail separates from the nail bed for whatever reason, it will not reattach. A new nail will have to grow back in its place. Nails grow back slowly. It takes about 6 months for a fingernail and up to 18 months for a toenail to grow back.

Since it has been six years with no regrowth, I can only suggest you speak with your primary care physician.

Regards,
Maryann
