Q:

Can you have an ectopic pregnancy without knowing?

So 4 days before my 'period' I had one day of diarrhea and then stomach pains for 3 days after. I occasionally felt a sharp pain in my side of my stomach. It wasn't that painful and didn't last long, barely a second. It made me wonder whether this is an ectopic pregnancy and that what I thought was my period was ectopic pregnancy bleeding. My symptoms have now gone and so has my period or whatever it was. Does that mean it wasn't an ectopic pregnancy? Is it possible that I've had a rupture without knowing? If the symptoms go do I still have to worry? How long does bleeding in an ectopic pregnancy last? Thanks! Btw I hasn't had sex only other risky sexual activities like fingering and dry humping with minimal clothing with got very damp with his fluids.

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome again to EmpowHER. I recognize you have asked about how to tell the difference between a period and ectopic pregnancy bleeding. I have provided you with information about an ectopic pregnancy and answered, to the best of my ability, all of your related questions.

You mention that you have not had sex. Without unprotected intercourse, pregnancy is not likely for you. As long as you were wearing clothes during dry humping, regardless if they became wet from lubrication, you were not at risk for becoming pregnant.

The diarrhea and stomach pain may have been symptoms of a stomach virus or reaction to something you ate.

I really think the bleeding that you had was your period. I hope that I have answered your question and settled this matter for you.

Regards,
Maryann

Thank you very much. Just to ease my mind could you tell me if it's possible to have a rupture without knowing and also if symptoms of ectopic pregnancy go away after a few days and don't get worse does that mean there is nothing to worry about?

Hello Anonymous,

If you were having a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, you would know it. The pain would be intense and there would be bleeding.

Symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy do not go away after a few days.

The ectopic pregnancy usually ruptures the wall of the fallopian tube in Weeks 6 to 8 since the last period. An ectopic pregnancy that implants partly in the fallopian tube and partly in the uterus usually ruptures later, between Weeks 12 and 16 of pregnancy. A woman whose fallopian tube has ruptured will feel severe pain that comes on suddenly, and will often faint due to massive internal bleeding in the abdomen. A rupture that occurs later in the pregnancy is very dangerous and can lead to death.

Maryann

Thank you so much! Is it possible to have an ectopic pregnancy without it rupturing? What happens if you just leave it

Hello Anonymous,

An ectopic pregnancy cannot develop normally because the fertilized egg does not implant in the uterus. It cannot survive. The only option is to end it.

If you do not have a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, it will be detected on ultrasound and the gynecologist may give you the drug methotrexate. This medication is injected into a muscle and reaches the embryo through your bloodstream. It ends the pregnancy by stopping the cells of the placenta from growing. (The tiny embryo is reabsorbed into your body over time.)

Maryann
