Hello and welcome to EmpowHer,
The most common cause of prolonged periods is Dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB), which is a hormonal dysfunction. Most doctors treat DUB with birth control pills.
Other conditions include:
Uterine fibroids, non-cancerous growths of the uterus wall
Endometrial hyperplasia, a thickened endometrium
A bleeding disorder, like von Willebrand disease
Problems with clotting
Thyroid functioning
Glandular issues
Infection
Ovarian cysts
Uterine polyps
Cancer
Most doctors will prescribe birth control pills without giving any exam. I highly suggest that you have any exam first to rule out any other possibilities besides hormonal imbalances; before submitting to any treatment.
