Celiac disease confirmed, bariatric surgery possible?

I have confirmed celiac disease, and have been gluten free for five and a half years. I am severly overweight. I am having trouble finding out if bariatric surgery is possible for someone that already has digestive issues, such as celiac disease. Has anyone had surgery AFTER being diagnosed celiac? I am seeing lots of posts on the web about celiac being diagnosed AFTER surgery. Thanks,

I had my full gastric bypass a year ago in July. I have had celiac spru for the last 9 years. I am doing very well after my surgery. I have lost 121 pounds and my celiac disease is well under control. I maintain my gluten free diet and well as a high protein diet. I stay away mostly from bread, gluten free, only having a slice or two occationally. I do like a gluten free bun with a burger. I do eat gluten free pasta (rice or noodles) mixed with my proteins. The symptoms are no worse than before my surgery. If I do get gluten in my diet by mistake, I feel it immediately. I have to take a massive amount of vitamins because of absorption problems. I have also added a probiotic which has Made a huge improvement in bowel health. I hope this helps someone In their decisions although every one is different. Good luck to you all out there.

I am 63 and was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in January 2014 - and have been Gluten Free for 10 months. I had Gastric LapBand Surgery in 2005 [lost 100+ pounds, but have regained 40] - I have to have my GLB removed next month due to Barrett's Esophagus and Hiatal Hernia. I know after going over the symptoms of Celiac that I have had this all of my life. I have always struggled with my weight and constipation. In year three post GLB, my trainer thought that I wasn't eating enough...and asked me to introduce whole grains into my diet [I cycle 100miles per week and work out]. I started gaining weight again & felt really bad & of course, was and am hungry all of the time! Now, I have a new doctor/surgeon - and he believes that I should do the Gastric Bypass. He believes that it will help bypass my small intestine - and improve my health by weight loss & maintainence. Does anyone have info on this topic [Gastric Bypass and Celiac Disease improvement post surgery].

I am suppose to have the Gastric Sleeve procedure. However, I just got my histology report and it is suggesting that I have celiac disease. Will I have issues with the gastric sleeve.

I have celiac and just had surgery December 27,2012. It is not easy as a gluten free diet is high in rice products and rice is high in carbs. Also, you have to watch your sugars.

I am planning to have bariatric surgery but am being tested for possible celiac disease. My understanding (so far) is that a roux an Y surgery may not be ideal but a gastric sleeve surgery is doable for someone with celiac or irritable bowel syndrome. I'm still researching to try to lock this down. The difference is that roux en y surgery can promote and increase diahrrea in someone who already has problems with it.

Hi, I was diagnosed with coeliac disease 4 years ago and had a gastric bypass 7 weeks ago. My surgeon said that it may actually help my coeliac as that area of small intestine that gets affected is bypassed.

Anon - Since you are interested in this surgery you have most likely reviewed the criteria established by the National Institutes of Health, which include:
* Be unable to achieve or maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise
* Have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher (extreme obesity)
* Have a BMI of 35 to 39.9 and also have a serious weight-related health problem, such as diabetes or high blood pressure

In general most surgeons will not exclude a person who has celiac disease, however, there have been cases reported in which bariatic surgery worsened the symptoms and you need to be prepared for that outcome.

If you do have the surgery we would love to hear back from you and learn how you're doing and what, if any, impact it has on your celiac disease. Good luck to you!
