I had follicular thyroid cancer in 2007 had total thyroidectomy and radio active iodene treatment and given all clear. I now have been called in because my cervical smear results are a concern and need more investergation. Is there any link between the two cancers.

Interesting question. I have had issues with thyroid health and cervical dysplasia that have occurred at the same time twice. I have found holistic health modalities very helpful for recovering and maintaining my health. I have found it interesting to note on reflexology charts, that the same area corresponds to both the neck and the cervix. Go figure! http://www.ofesite.com/health/reflex/chart/

Anon - That's an interesting question. Many people have more than one type of cancer. Sometimes they occur at the same time, often they occur separately.

It isn't likely that there is a direct link between your thyroid cancer and potential cervical cancer but there could be an indirect link. For example, smoking is linked to most cancers and a person who smokes is more likely to have one or more types of cancer. You may find it helpful to have more information on the causes of cervical cancer, here is the link to our reference page: http://www.empowher.com/media/reference/cervical-cancer#definition

What's important right now is to be sure to follow up with your physician and obtain follow up tests to clarify your results. If you need additional information after doing so we would be happy to answer questions and link you to resources. I hope you'll keep in touch and let us know the outcome.

Take care, Pat
