Q:

Condoms or the Pill?

I am nineteen and in a sexually active relationship with my boyfriend. Right now we are always using condoms when we have sex, but I am trying to figure out whether I should also start taking birth control pills, specifically Yaz. The thing is, we are in a long distance relationship right now and only see each other a couple days a month; typically having sex, at the most, four times a month. I am hesitant to try birth control pills because of possibe side effects; and my partner is okay with only using condoms. I just really cannot get pregnant right now; but I am wondering whether a condom alone would be enough to keep me from getting pregnant?

Hi Anon,

Welcome to EmpowHER and thanks for your question. Being a teen and not wanting to get pregnant at the time. Using birth control and condoms would probably be the best. The birth control pill does not protect against STDs. Couples having sex must always use condoms along with the Pill to protect against STDs and pregnancy. It's very important to see your doctor to help you determine which birth control works best for you.

Best of luck,
Daisy
