Q:

Could I be pregnant and still have bleeding from stopping the pill?

I stopped the pill on June 28th and had unprotected sex July 2nd and 3rd. On the 2nd I started having some spotting from stopping the pill. My period is not due for 11 more days. According to the app on my phone I was suppose to ovulate on the second. I'm just confused about whether i could be pregnant or not because of the bleeding. should my regular period still come as scheduled ( if I'm not pregnant)? Has this ever happened to anyone? Should I start my pills back to stop the bleeding? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Thank you for reaching out to our community for advice. You really must speak with your gynecologist and follow any recommendations.

Why did you stop taking your birth control pills? Are you trying to conceive?

Birth control pills prevent pregnancy by preventing ovulation. A daily dose of an active pill, taken at the same time each day, achieves this goal. The spotting was probably triggered by stopping the active pills.

It would be too early for any signs of pregnancy, two to three days following unprotected intercourse. I would suggest you not restart taking your pills. Call your doctor.

Regards,
Maryann
