I have lost three people in the last month. Is it really true that deaths come in 3's?

It is very weird how tragedies come in threes. Every time I hear about a plane crash, I expect two more to follow. It's so mind boggling how that happens to hold true every time!

3 is a magic number, in religion, mythology, mathematics, science and more.

Three, Wikkpedia

My condolences to you for your losses.

I'm so very sorry for your losses. Who did you lose? Were they family members? I'd love to hear about them and how you're doing today.

I too am so sorry for your losses. Losing just one person is hard enough. Losing three in a month seems unimaginably hard to bear.

I think one of the reasons that the "death comes in threes" saying is so popular is that people tend to use celebrity deaths as evidence. Often, it seems like a famous person dies -- an entertainer, perhaps -- and within the next few weeks, another one or two famous people die, possibly also entertainers. We will sometimes say "Well, death comes in threes," but that suggests that these three totally unrelated people somehow had a connection between them that influenced the times of their deaths.

Also, I think once we hear about a famous person who died, our "radar" is up to hear about the next one, and the next, almost grouping them in our minds. However, we never notice all the well-known people who die in "ones".

In 1997, fashion designer Gianni Versace died in July, Princess Diana died in August, and Mother Teresa died in September. Many people grouped them in a set of three. However, a connection between a designer being shot and killed in Miami, a princess dying in a car accident in Paris and a saintly nun at the end of a long life in India seems coincidental at best. It's just because we notice them so much that it seems to prove so.

Best wishes to you as you move ahead through such a hard time. Come back and tell us how you're doing.

I'm so sorry to hear that you have suffered the loss of three people in just the past month. How are you and your loved ones coping?

As far as the question that "death comes in three's", there are many folk lores, stories and superstitions about death, probably because death is such a difficult subject to talk about.

A few other superstitions surrounding death:
- You should never sleep with your head in North position or you will have a short life (this is the way a body is laid out at funeral).
- You should never write a persons name in red ink.

Regarding the "death in 3's", I would assume it depends on the time frame and other circumstances: if the three people die in one day, one month or five years of each other; if they are all in the same family, same place of work?

Lastly, I think it depends on everyone's different belief systems, but this could be a scary thing to believe in. I did not find any historical reasons for the 3's.

But, more importantly, I am truly sorry that you had to go through this, no matter what the number. I hope to hear how you are doing.
