Q:

Diflucan and Nuvaring

I took a single dose Diflucan pill in my ring free week, three days before I was supposed to insert my nuvaring. I forgot about checking to see if Diflucan interacts with birth control, and my husband and I had unprotected sex 6 days after I took the Diflucan pill. I have been experiencing some light brown discharge and some abdominal pain, but it is not close to my period. It is too early to take a pregnancy test. I have read mixed messages about Diflucan and I dont know if I could possibly be pregnant or if I am having other issues. Thank you for your time.

Hi Anon,

Welcome to EmpowHER.  Doesn't seem like there can be any interaction between these two.  The symptoms can be due to the Birth control. Some of the side effects of NuvaRing are:

  • Vomiting
  • Change in appetite
  • Abdominal cramps and bloating
  • Breast tenderness or enlargement
  • Irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting
  • Changes in menstrual cycle
  • Temporary infertility after treatment
  • Fluid retention (edema)
  • If the symptoms continue it might be good to let your doctor know.
