I'm 53 and premenopausal I have had really bad PMT all my grown up life which has had a huge effect on my life and relationships. Can I go through the menopause and not need HRT but then age a lot quicker, or take HRT and still have hurrendous PMT.

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. The decision to take hormone replacement therapy is yours. I will provide you with information. I suggest you consider the benefits and the risks.

For the benefit of all our readers, PMT or premenstrual tension is synonymous with PMS or premenstrual syndrome. The symptoms range from disturbed sleep, hot flashes, night sweats to mood swings and panic attacks.

These same symptoms are often experienced during perimenopause and menopause. Changes in hormone levels are the cause in both situations. Treatment options include hormone replacement therapy or natural remedies.

Systemic estrogen replacement is still the most effective treatment for menopausal symptoms. The benefits of hormone therapy may outweigh the risks if you're healthy. There is an increased risk for developing heart disease, stroke, blood clots and breast cancer.
It is recommended that the lowest dose be used for the shortest amount of time.

How you age is not affected by whether or not you choose to use hormone replacement therapy.

I would like to provide you with links to information on our website.
