Q:

Do I need to consider IVF for having a second child?

Hi,

I have a 2 year old lovely daughter. I conceieved my daughter from the fertility treatment (IUI cycles) on my 6th cycle. I am trying to have another child. I conceived twice naturally (not from the fertility treatments) but both pregnancies resulted in miscarraiges which was very painful. In between the two pregnancies, I had gone through the fertility treatments (IUI cycles) for three cycles but they were unscuccessful. So should I consider IVF for having a second child, continue the IUI cycles or wait until I conceive naturally? I was diagnosied with PCOS and Insulin resistant 6 years back and I am very well managing my condition now.

I appreciate your advice.

Thanks,
Usha

Usha,
We received a response from our EmpowHER expert, Dr. Philip Sarrel:

Hi Usha:

Your story of previous miscarriages with naturally-occurring pregnancies and success with IVF indicates that the treatment women receive as part of the IVF process is important for you. Control of your PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) is essential. It's also necessary that hormone preparation of the lining of the uterus be accomplished so that a fertilized egg can implant in the lining and be nourished properly. The physician who is helping you control the PCOS should be consulted for advice regarding IVF.

Thanks for your prompt response. I have an appointment with my doctor in few days and I am going to discuss these options with her.

Hi Usha,
This is a great question, and I submitted it to one of our medical experts for advice. I will be in touch soon once I receive a reply!

In the meantime, what have your own doctors recommended?
