My wife got the mirena and she had similar symptoms of pain during sex. Several visits back to the OB-GYN during which ultrasounds all showed correct insertion yielded no answers. She had it removed and the pain went away. The Ob-GYN said about 3% of women have feeling at the cervix, and maybe my wife was one of those 3%.

I don't know for sure, but if it is causing you pain, don't keep it in. There are other methods of contraception available.

Hi Anonymous,
If you are experiencing pain and/or numbness, you should consult your physician immediately. Please keep us posted on the feedback you get from your physician.

Good luck,
Missie

I seem to have had a lot of the side effects mentioned above but also I have been experiencing a combination of stinging pain at the opening of my vagina and then numbness further inside. Before the IUD I have always been ultra sensitive. Has anyone else experienced anything like this and if so did it pass with time. I would love some feedback. Thanks

yes! i had a mirena inserted 2 weeks ago at 3 months postpartum and am having exact same thing-vaginal numbess and pain at opening, used to be very sensitive and now it feels like nothing. really weird. i feel pressure but NO sensation. did this go away for you ever? my dr. wants me to wait until the 3 month period to decide but i don't think i can even give it another week. I have no loss of libido, so its really depressing/frustrating.

I had the Mirena inserted in April of this year. Since insertion I've had light to very heavy periods. With the heaviest starting yestery. It was so heavy, I saturated 3 pads in 8 hours and passed some very large clots. I've been to the OB/GYN who inserted in and she seems hesitant to take it out and has offered to do an ablation with either the warmed balloon or the nuvomed method. I am hesitant. I want it out, especially after yesterday. Also approximately 2 weeks ago, I had some bleeding. That was light. I had terrible cramps and back pain yesterday.
Also, I have a small 2.4 cm cyst on my left ovary and get terrible mittleschmirtz pain some months.
PLEASE ADVISE!!

Hello. My name is rachel I am 24 yrs old and just gave birth two my first children (twins) in march 2010. They came a month early bc I got preclam. I got the merina inserted 12 weeks after the birth. I decided on the iud bc it was less to worry about and lasted 5 yrs.. the doc.s gave me a pill to dialate me and the insertion went like butter... didn't even feel a thing. I had some pretty heavy bleeding that lasted 3 months but everytime I calledthe doc they said it was normal.. everything was going great so I never went to the 6 week check up bc my insurence was cansled... but over the last month I have been noticing a lot of changes in my body.. a lot of people are telling me it might just be bc I had twins and that really takes a toll on ur body... I am also a smoker about a 1/2 a pack a day... I have been exsperencing migraines about everyday... sometimes to the point they put me in tears(wich only makes it worse) and nothing works for them wich it not normal for me... I have unexsplained weight gain.. befor I got preg. I weighted 179 and went up to 230 during the preg. Then after birth weighed 160. I am now 192... I am a pretty healthy eater and very active with the twins at the crawling stage and all... I am having chest pain alll the time. And it gets worse when I lay on my back, like there is always pressure on my chest... I have a discharge that I've never had befor but only when I was pregnant.. its white and creamy ad sweet smelling... also I feel very weak and faint... disorianted ad sometimes very confused... and sometimes just out of nowere my heart raises wich feels like 100mph... my hands start to shake and I feel like a school girl who just saw her first crush... my teeth are bleeding all the time out of nowere and I don't breast feed... my entier back hurts all the time, wich I though was just from carring two babies around...and my abdome hurts from time to time but it happens everyday... its like a sharp pinching feeling.. I mean it hurts but nothing to cry over... but itsmore anoying than anything bc I can't move when it happens... and on top of all that I have NEVER had a acne problem in my life and I an constly broken out all the time and they are taking a very long time to heal... any kind of scrach or broose or cut anymore just won't heal... I can still feel my strings but I don't know if they r any longer than they use to be my xboyfriend use to check them for me... they are pretty long I can just put the tip of my finger in and there they r... all of this talk about all of these side effect and stuff happining has me kinda freaked out... but I do love the iud.. but if my heath is at rick than its not worth it... could I be pregnant or r these side effects?? Should I get it taken out?? I don't know what to do bc I no longer have health insurence... I don't know if I'm being overly parinoied or if this is something I need to get checked out... plz someone help me with some advice! Thank u.... rachel

hi my name is Ana and i had my iud mirena in for 5 years at the beginning I didnt notice anything. Into my 3rd year I started to notice joint pains, sinuses, depression, loss of hair but never thought it was the iud. I also had a hard time breathing and always thought it was my allergies that by the way, just kept getting worse. In February of 2010 I had the worst sinus infections couldn't get hid of it, went of antibiotics 3 times. My blood pressure spiked up, and I felt like I would die. I also found out I was anemic due to the heavy periods I had while I was on the Merina. At this point the back of my neck was so sore and my headaches were so severe. I had the mirena removed in March, and its been the same if not worse. The sinuses in my head are always tingling and burning, I have bad pain in the bridge of my nose. I also have muscle twitches and my head feels weird everyday. It has been 6 months post removal for me, I wish I could feel better. My doctor wont listen to me and says its all in my mind.

Ana - I'm sorry to read about what you've been experiencing. Are you saying that your gynecologist will not listen to you? Do you have a primary care physician? You need to get expert help to deal with the sinus and nose pain, as well as the muscle twitching and feeling abnormal. These symptoms may or may not have anything to do with your IUD, but no matter what you need to get medical attention. Can you see another doctor and let us know when you do? Pat
