Q:

Does anyone else sneeze after eating mints?

With near predictability I sneeze following the intake of mint whether it's gum, a breath mint, Listerine breath strips, or something else. I've now come to refer to these items as Sneezey Treats. Following the two sneezes, there are no other symptoms. I don't break out in hives, no watery eyes, nothing.

Anyone else got this going on? I obviously don't need to rush to the emergency room and the solution is even more obvious -- stop consuming this stuff, right -- but am looking for fellow MSPs -- or mint sensitive people. Any out there?

This has been happening to me as well for my whole life! I'm 21 now andmints and chocolate will do the trick! It is generally with semi-sweet chocolate (like chocolate chips or something with a high concentration of them in a food item) or dark chocolate. Strong minty things like listerine strips, altoids, or anything with the strong little mint flavor bursts that look like blue dots. My family has always given me grief for it, especially the chocolate, because I could never sneak any chocolate candies without getting caught :) ive never understood it, but just accepted it as life and learned to have a tissue or napkin with all chocolate just incase. It did happen to me more as a child and a little less now that I'm older. Perhaps I've developed a certain tolerance to chocolate?

This has happened to me my entire life. When I was a kid I never worried about it and I actually thought it was a natural reaction to eating a mint. Mine seems to be worse depending on how strong the mint is. Strong mints make my throat itch and make me sneeze several times. Other things that are mild like mint ice cream have no effect. Toothpaste actually does have an effect on me. I just started using a new crest whitening one and I sneeze twice everyday after brushing my teeth. Crest does have an orange flavor toothpaste that helps me not sneeze, if anyone else has tooth paste problems. I always wondered if I was allergic, don't really want to stop eating mint though.

Gotta love the Internet! My wife handed me a mint a few minutes ago, and it made me sneeze. Since I had the Macbook sitting out, I Googled it and find out it is kind of common. I never noticed the sunlight thing, and not sure about dark chocolate because I just don't like dark chocolate. I should mention that it seems to be mainly with peppermint, especially strong ones like Altoids. I have never sneezed mouthwash all over the bathroom mirror either, and I would imagine blowing Listerine out your nose would SUCK! :) Nice to hear we are all in this together.

I have the exact same problem! Well it's not so much a problem, but it gets quite embarrassing if i'm in public or somewhere quiet and i eat a mint, forgetting what is to follow. Yup, two sneezes almost every time! Hahaha gotta laugh at it though, i'm glad i'm not the only one :P

I noticed that the ONLY time I sneeze with mints is when I have really strong gum or mints. Other than that, I have no symptoms. Does it perhaps have to do with the roof of your mouth? You know, the reason why we all get brain freeze when eating ice cream? I notice if I take a mint and push it up against the roof of my mouth, it always causes me to sneeze. Interesting.

I just googled this to see if i was the only one.. seems not. I'm the same as many here, i sneeze once a few seconds after putting the gum or mint in my mouth but then nothing after that.. no issue with tooth paste. I do not think i have always had this problem; i'm 23 and im fairly sure this developed during or after puberty, this could indicate just some mild chemical reaction from changing or inbalanced hormone/chemical levels maybe?
