ask: Does long term airplane travel effect getting pregnant ?

I know some women in their 30-40's that have been traveling for business and have had issues getting pregnant.  Is there a connection between high-levels of travel and pregnancy?

Hi Jenny

Great question!

Long-term air travel can affect fertility for several reasons. Firstly, being in different time zones, as well as travel stress and fatgue can change your ovulation patterns and increase the risk of irregularity. Actually flying will not affect getting pregnant since cabins are pressurized.

Other factors as to why travel can affect fertility is that a woman who flies a lot may miss her chances of pregnancy since she may not be able to have sex right before or during ovulation.

also noticed that you mentioned your friends who are in their 30s and 40s. Most women in their 40s will have some modicum of difficult getting pregnant in the first place, most especially after 45. Missing sex-during-ovulation will really hinder their chances of pregnancy since their time is limited anyway. Some women in their mid to upper 30s may also find it less easy to get pregnant than younger women so constant travel will also factor in.

Women who really want to get pregnant at this age should look into staying close to their partners when ovulating or decreasing their travel at this time.

Good luck to your friends, I hope they have success very soon!
