Donating Hair: Locks of Love vs. Pantene Pro-V Beautiful Lengths

For so long I have been frustrated with the inability to grow my hair out. About 6 months ago I came across Pantene Pro-V's new product, Beautiful Lengths lengthening shampoo and conditioner. I figured it probably would not work but I have liked their products in the past so I bought it anyway. About 4 months after using the shampoo and conditioner my hair began to grow like a weed! Now, 6 months later my hair is 2 feet and some odd inches long.

I would love to donate my hair soon, but I am having trouble deciding between the Locks of Love and Pantene's Beautiful Length's program. I was wondering if anyone can give me some insight or advice on which to choose and why.

In my opinion I would donate to Locks of Love because it is for children. I think kids have a harder time dealing with insecurities than adults do. An adult can go into any wig store and purchase one, but there aren't any for kids.

I have donated to Pantene's program in the past and am about to cut another 8 inches off. This time I think I will try Children with Hairloss (I like the idea of it going to a kid). I am choosing between those two because both only recuire 8 inches instead of 10 or 12 (impossible for me) for the others.

Rosa, thank you so much for the links. I am considering my hair and your links have been a great help. (At the moment Children with Hairloss is my top choice and before finding this discussion, I was in Annie's boat with Pantene vs. Locks of Love.) Annie, what did you decide, and how did it go? T

Thanks all!

I just donated to Beautiful Lengths. I love that they provide their wigs for free to cancer patients. And they only require a hair length of 8 inches compared to most others that require 12 inches.

It takes 6-8 ponytails to create a wig and I have issued a hair challenge on my blog to get as many people as we can to donate - check it out: http://733blog.blogspot.com/2009/08/hair-challenge-beautiful-lengths-hair.html

I don't think that the comments are fair. I have donated four ponytails to locks of love over the years, each over a foot of natural untreated hair. Locks of love has been featured and fully vetted by Oprah's organization. They provide hair to children with alopecia who'd hair, by definition, will not return, ever or to any real extent. Cancer patients hair grows back presumably and they need hair pieces also. I donate clothing and furniture routinely to Goodwill. They, in turn, charge for their products when they sell them back to the community. Locks of love charges on a sliding scale. Goodwill charges. Numerous scientific studies have shown that providing something for free destroys its true value. Its the premise behind many sliding scale programs. I suggest that as a minimum, locks of love is providing a valuable service to the community and relies upon donations. They should be appreciated like all other not-for-profit services.

When I donated to Locks of Love, they were unbelievably rude to me. They didn't even send me a letter or postcard letting me know they received my hair. In fact when I e-mailed to see if they'd received my hair, they were terse and seemed bothered that I would dare ask for a confirmation. If I had known how much they charged for their wigs I never would have donated. Disgusting.

I donated my hair to LOL a few years back and the same thing happened to me! I was really put off because I had just cut off 18 inches and they couldn't tell me if they had received it or not. I had filled out the donation form and sent it with my hair donation and nothing ever came. I am now getting ready to donate my hair again and am looking for another place to send it since I had such a sour experience with LOL.

I donated to Locks of Love about three years ago and had the same issue. They say that you will receive a thank you letter when your hair is received, but I never got anything either. I didn't think to call to see if they got it because the ends still had some color, which they said was a no no, but I sent it anyway figuring they could cut out the small parts they couldn't use. Now that I have been checking out this site, I am disappointed that I sent my hair there. I did it because I wasn't aware that there were other places out there. I am about to cut my hair again and will definitely be sending it to one of the other places mentioned...

Childrenwithhairloss.us is the better option for myself personally as 8 inches is the minimum and they "prefer" non chemically treated hair whereas wigforkids disaallows. My hair is colored slightly. I didn't know this tip about Locls of Love, so children with hairloss seems to me too to be a better choice. Thanks for this info!
