I recently have lost about half of my head of hair. It fell out within a matter of 2 to3 weeks. Thank goodbness I had a lot of naturally curly hair, but it is very noticeable and I am self conscious. I am a54 year old female; total hysterectomy due to cancer June 2010, chemo and radiation followed, inherited NASH liver disease. Taking blood pressure med (for many years), cymbalta for fibromyalgia, and wellbutrin. Have lab work every 3 months. On a diet which eliminates anything white (sugar, flour, breads, potatoes, rice, etc.) and eliminates fruits high in sugar (grapes, melons, cherries). I have currently lost approximately 36 lbs and currently weigh 155 lbs at 5'3". I am trying to reach a goal of 130 lbs. I am no longer taking metformin or cholesterol meds.

My thyroid test was normal in October. I have been under an extreme amount of stress and had a 'emotional shock' in October. What can I do about promoting hair growth and preventing future hair loss. Thank you.

Hi Anon,

Welcome to EmpowHER and thanks for coming to us for support.  Sounds like you have been through a lot.  Most hair loss is not associated with systemic or internal disease, nor is poor diet a frequent factor. Frequently, hair may simply thin as a result of predetermined genetic factors, family history, and the overall aging process. Temporary severe stress, nutritional changes, and hormonal changes like those in pregnancy, puberty and menopause may cause a hair loss.    Depending on what can be causing the hair loss, for example if it’s stress. Sometimes, prescribed medication such as Antidepressant can help in alleviating the stress and it’s symptoms. Also, a good daily multi vitamin can also help.  You will need to discuss with your doctor first and he can better direct you as to what can be the cause.
