ask: Fungal Infection

One of my friends who has a very sweet tooth has developed something which has now been diagnosed as a "fungal infection". It tickles her throat, so to speak, and sometimes makes her voice break; also it gives her a white coat on the palms of her hands. She has told me that the doctor said it will develop further if she doesn't stop eating 1) sweets, and 2) fruits.

Hi Augusta,
Did you have a question that we can help answer for you or your friend?

Yes, I wanted some advice which I promised her I would try to get somehow: What medicine can be used against this annoying problem? She has been given some kind of ointment for her hands, but that doesn't seem very useful. Also it seems that the problem with a fungal infection may be likened to the iceber: You only see the top of it ...

Augusta - It's hard to know how to help you friend without clearly knowing what she's dealing with. What, if anything, is your friend's doctor doing to help her other than telling her to avoid certain foods? Has her doctor told her exactly what she has?

There is an oral thrush is a type of fungal infection, you can read more here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/oral-thrush/DS00408 If this is what she's dealing with she needs to get appropriate medical attention as this can be difficult, and time-consuming, to treat.

Let us know what you learn,
Pat

The doctor hasn't done much except warning her against her sweet tooth and telling her that the pill and some dental habits may worsen the condition. As far as I know there hasn't been any real tests, but she is to see a dermatologist about her skin condition.

Thanks for the additional information, Augusta, but this is still puzzling. Can you go to the dermatology appointment with your friend? It would help to ask the dermatologist to provide the name of the diagnosis that the first doctor has given your friend, and the dermatologist's diagnosis too. Is the cream helping at all? How's she doing? If you can find out the type of cream she is using we can get you more information about it and that may help somewhat but we really need to better understand the medical diagnosis to help you help her.
