Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to the EmpowHER community and thank you for seeking our help with your problem of strong body odor.

Strong body odor is something some women experience during and after menopause. The cause is increased perspiration. Hot flashes and night sweats in particular have a strong effect, though psychological symptoms such as depression, panic attacks, or anxiety can lead to an increase in the incidence of sweating as well. More sweat leads to changes in body odor.

Hormone fluctuations are the primary cause for changes in body odor. Estrogen is responsible for helping regulate the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that controls body temperature.

When estrogen levels drop, a false message is sent to the hypothalamus saying that the body is overheated. Consequently, the hypothalamus causes an increase in sweat production and changes in body odor.

Anonymous, speak with your primary care physician or gynecologist before taking any herbal or dietary supplements.

Using a stronger clinical strength antiperspirant, bathing more often with a deodorant soap, and wearing clothing made of breathable fabric, for example cotton instead of polyester, may help short term.

Regards,
Maryann
