I have been given three antibiotics keflex which I read don't use if you are short of breath, Dalacin which made me sick, and was told never to use ciprofloxacan because of my sensitive stomach, I have some sort of infection that just makes me sick, and of course the fear big time of going back to the dentist, I am on a antivan for a anti anxiety but any other antibiotic I should take to ensure no other bad stuff, but I do have shortness of breath. thank you for any input.

Hi, Debra. I'm going to pull your question out into its own thread so that perhaps more readers will find it. You can find it and any responses here:

I''ve taken a weeks course of anti biotics for an ear infection, but my ears still remain blocked up and I can''t hear properly. What can I do? I''ve tried ear drops but they just vlock my ears up completely.

I think all of those anti-biotics are very rough on your tummy.
Try Zithromax its is only 5 days and although its not primarily for what type of infection you have it might do the trick. Also, so your stomach doesnt feel sick and to prevent yeast infections ,eat plenty of yogurt to keep a healthy balance in your digestive track.

I work in the dental field and I know how paralyzing of a fear you have. Theyre are little things you can do to comfort yourself.
1- bring your IPOD or any type of music you can listen to while in the chair.
2- Breathing techniques. Try and breath in through your nose out through your mouth .(breathing through your nose helps with gagging as well)
3- For you anxiety repeat -
"this is UNCOMFORTABLE not DANGEROUS"
"This will pass"
Try and focus any anything in the room you can. A light fixture for example... ask yourself questions about it.. Where type of light is it? Where could you buy one? or even the drapes in the room... what texture is it? I know it sounds far fetched but Sight ..smell and feel of things really takes your mind of the viscous panic cycle your brain gets into.

Lastly, tell the assistant or doctor of your fear and asks if you can take frequent breaks. Tell them you will raise your right hand when you need them to stop.

You will get through this! Youll be glad when you did!!
Good Luck!

I'm not sure I understand your question...let me see if I have your information correct:

You have been prescribed three different antibiotics:
1) Keflex (Cephalexin)
2) Ciprofloxacin
3) Dalacin---could not find this, do you know the proper spelling?

You have been prescribed an "anti-anxiety" drug also? I'm not sure what an "antivan" is. Do you know the actual drug name?

Where you prescribed all of these drugs at one time? Did your doctor tell you why s/he prescribed three antibiotics, or did you try one and it didn't work? Is the reason you were prescribed three antibiotics for your dental problems? I'm not sure why you would be prescribed antibiotics if your teeth were just capped; I'm assuming you had an infection of some kind. Can you tell us more?

You said you also have an upset stomach, due to an infection. Is this the infection that you were prescribed the antibiotics for?

I'm not sure where the "shortness of breath" question comes in as a problem with taking the medication...can you explain this more?

Hope to hear back from you soon, so I can provide some information!

Hi, I am in Mexico but american, the dalacin- clindamicina, made me real sick to my stomach, then the next one called keflex was prescriped the Keflex is cefalexina was a little better but was not doing the trick, and finally the severin -nimesulida was for neck problems, after 2 1/2 hours in a dental chair, constant work, yikes, I spelled the word wrong anti-anxiety medication was ativan, and they where prescipred at different times, when the stress was to much they advised to take one of these, the last appointment is tonight, thank god, but still short of breath, tried breathing tecniques, but does not seem to help, just hurts my chest and back trying to catch my breath. thanks

Hi soyadog,

Thanks for clarifying! Is your shortness of breath from being scared of your upcoming appointment for dental work, or are you still thinking it is antibiotic-related?

How long have you had shortness of breath? Is your anxiety from your dental work, or have you been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder separate from this?

Tell your doctor about your shortness of breath at your appointment today: what triggers it, how long it lasts at every episode (minutes, hours), how long you have been experiencing it (days, weeks, months??), and any other symptoms you have.

If you are looking more for words of advice (and not for a recommendation of a type of antibiotic without side effects??), then I can offer that as well! :-) And, some words of encouragement: you are doing the best thing for yourself, by easing your mind beforehand through searching for information and reaching out for support. You'll do great!

There are some definite techniques to help with dental phobia:
- guided imagery or hypnosis (hypnosis would not work for tonight, it takes practice. guided imagery you can do tonight)
- listening to music
- listening to a meditation or guided imagery CD
- going to a dentist that understands your fear
- dental sedation
- bring a trusted friend along with you for support
You can read about more ideas at the Cleveland Clinic

Let us know if you need any more information!
