Q:

Have you had experience with the Wiley Protocol?

Has anyone had experience using the Wiley Protocol of hormone replacement therapy?

It is a method where bioidentical hormones are prescribed and are given transdermally -- through the skin -- in a patent-pending cream. A primary

difference between this protocol and some others is that the hormonal levels rise and fall, similar to the way a woman's normal cycle did when she was still menstruating.

There is some controversy on the web about T.S. Wiley's qualifications for developing a medical protocol, since she is not a doctor herself, she studied anthropology (though she co-authored the book "Sex, Lies, and Menopause" with Julie Taguchi, M.D.)

Some women claim wonderful results; others claim very troubling side effects. Does anyone out there have personal experiences to share?

Wow. Thank you SO much for writing. I think I, too, got the impression that Suzanne Somers was still on Wiley, even after all the research for the book. It's interesting to find out that she's not. And it's very interesting to hear your doctor's experience. Thank you very much.

Amanda, thank you so much for writing about your experience. I'm curious, did you switch doctors when you switched to your bioidentical hormones? Or was your doctor fine with either path? It seems that some doctors really push one way or the other.

I was on the Wiley Protocol and gained a lot of weight. It made me lose hair also. This particular high dose regimen is very hard on the thyroid and makes a lot of people hypothyroid. People have ended up in the emergency room from the Wiley Protocol from bleeding, asthma attacks , gall bladder problems and kidney stones.

If you see TS Wiley speak, you will see she is very heavy and appears to have a thyroid goiter.
I have stopped the Wiley protocol and switched to a reduced dosage of bioidentical hormones which I take every day. I feel much better and lost 30 pounds.

T.S. Wiley does not have a goiter, or any Thyroid related issues. She's been on the protocol since inventing it about 11 years ago.

I went looking for documented cases (not the fraudulent ones from those who are trying to discredit Wiley) where "people have ended up in the emergency room from the Wiley Protocol..." and honestly, I can't find any. My doctor also has never heard of any. And truthfully... bleeding? Uh, that's what we women are supposed to do every month. Asthma attack, gall bladder problems and kidney stone from the Wiley Protocol? What? How ridiculous a claim is that. So, someone ends up in an emergency room from a kidney stone (which my daughter has suffered from, btw). Of course the doctor must conclude that it's a because the patient is on a rhythmic dosage of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy! Puleaze.

While doing withdrawal from the protocol, I ended up in the emergency room with severe back pain. Docs could not find anything, but an ultrasound revealed kidney swelling. Doc said it was part of the withdrawal process from toxic doses of estrogen.

I have been on the protocol for four months and still don't feel quite right. Anxiety is still present, but seems to be getting better. Sleeping well. However I have know had issues with asthma like symtoms for several weeks, thoart pain, stuffy nose and a dry cough last two weeks, not sure if related, but did notice some connection between asthma and hormornes. I have not had asthma ever before, I am significantly over weight 215, and have lost a little over 10 pounds since i started the protocol, which i attribute to concious choice of better foods. has anyone had any similar issues?

I have been on the Wiley protocol for about a year, now in conjuction with amino acids which directly treat neurotransmitter (think seratonin, adrenaline) imbalance which goes hand in hand with hormonal imbalance as well as thyroid and adrenal problems. Find a good M.D. that is well versed in these subjects and is knowledgeable about nutrition. The results are amazingly positive for me however abdominal weight gain has been a side effect. Don't forget that sleep is crucially involved in all the above problems. There is an M.D. here in Dallas that is a genius and very holistic and is performing research of her own with the thousands of patients she currently treats using the Wiley protocol.
