I am on birth control and today is the day that I would be taking my sugar pill, but I want to skip my period because I am going out of town. I forgot my new pill pack at home and wont be able to get home until 11 or 12 tonight. Should I be ok, if I have sex later on today before I go home?

Huhh... I feel so embarrassed.. lol
July 30, 2009 - 1:39pmBut, I know that it is ok to skip my period so I guess my real question is, will I still be protected tonight if i have sex? I have not missed a pill and it will be delayed for a few hours.

Hi,
Thanks for letting me make fun of the situation a little! :-)
Yes, you would be protected tonight from the hormonal contraception that you have been taking consistently and correctly from previous days. Tonight's contraception that is delayed a few hours would not impact your protection.
Thanks for being PROACTIVE in your health, and asking the question before you engaged in any (potential) risky behavior. You are a smart woman!

Are you asking our permission to have sex tonight without taking a pill?! That is hilarious! :-)
You sound like you have two questions:
1. How to delay a period for a vacation? My friend was going on her honeymoon and wanted to delay her period, so she called her doctor to ask. Since every pill is different, your best information would come from your doctor's office (you can ask a nurse). Here is some information from Mayo Clinic that describes how to delay your period by skipping the "hormone-free" pills and starting a new pack instead for 2 weeks. This depends on the strength of your pill; they suggest the best one is with 20-35 mcg of estrogen. It is important to note that this can still cause bleeding ("breakthrough bleeding"), and should only be done for a few weeks; again, the best thing is to call your doctor's office to make sure this works and is still effective. You can read about it here.
2. Your second question about having sex today before you go home to take your pill pack. Have you missed a pill, or it is just going to be delayed a few hours this evening? If you have not missed a pill, you are still protected from the hormones.
