Premenopausal symptoms can start in your 40's, so you are right that it may be the reason for these usual periods. Each period should generally be at least 28 days a part. But since your period earlier this month was so short, it shouldn't be dangerous for your body to have them so close together.
I suggest that you wait through this period and your next one and see how they go. If these next 2 periods are irregular as well, you can assume it is premenopausal.
