Hi Zeeny and thanks for bringing your concerns to EmpowHER.

Every woman's body and circumstances are different. Some women have no periods while breastfeeding, while others start them again within six months. And it's also possible to be fertile while breastfeeding – many nursing mothers have been surprised by an unplanned pregnancy.

In most cases, women will release their first postpartum egg before their periods start again. If you don't start using birth control as soon as you start having sex again, you can get pregnant even before having your first period.

You may want to take a pregnancy test now to determine if you are pregnant and to gain peace of mind.

In terms of taking an emergency contraceptive multiple times, the literature indicates this is safe from a medical perspective. The hormone in the pill is the same as ones found in the birth control pill – and that naturally occur in your body. It will not have a long-term effect on your reproductive health.

If you find yourself continuously having to take emergency contraception, it may be time to find another form of birth control which is more effective.

Hope that helps,

Pam
