Q:

Hip pain in middle of the night; dull ache that wakes me up. What could it be?

I am in my mid-30s, and have recently been having pain in my hips in the middle of the night. It reminds me of the RLS (restless leg syndrome) commercials, although I do not have any of these symptoms (no needle-sensation, no crawling-sensation). It is a dull ache, and I try to move my hips and legs around to get rid of the pain (it feels like it is deep inside, not a muscle or bone), but moving it seems to irritate it a little more. It is actually not on my hip bone, but closer to the middle of my "gluteus maximus" on each side. It's been happening the past few weeks, always around 2am or 3am and wakes me up.

I've been taking some ibuprofen, and eventually falling back asleep, but would rather not have to keep taking medication.

When I was pregnant with my child 3 years ago, I had a real problem with my sciatic (spelling?) nerve in my hips. Feels similar, but not the same.

Any suggestions?

We have not heard back from the original member who posted the question, but we are happy to help you find some information!

One of the EmpowHER moderators mentioned that something as simple as an old mattress can contribute to joint pain, and cause you to wake up in the middle of the night. Have you considered this as a source?

Also, since you sit for long periods of the day, do you have a chair that is ergonomically fit to your body, as well as your work station? Something as seemingly simple as your posture, computer height (or chair or desk height), a foot stool can provide comfort to your joints, and the reverse can actually cause pain. The same can be said for wearing the right kind of shoes..do you wear high heels often?

If all else fails, do you feel that you may have arthritis or other condition of your joints? Do any of these types of conditions run in your family, or do you have any risk factors for arthritis? Here is some more information regarding osteoarthritis, but this is just to "rule out" any additional symptoms:
EmpowHER: Osteoarthritis:
Risk Factors
* Obesity
* Genetic factors
* Injury to the joint surface
* Occupations and physical activities that put stress on joints
* Neuromuscular disorders like diabetes

Symptoms:
* Mild to severe pain in a joint, especially after overuse or long periods of inactivity, such as sitting for a long time
* Creaking or grating sound in the joint
* Swelling, stiffness, limited movement of the joint, especially in the morning
* Weakness in muscles around the sore joint
* Deformity of the joint

I have the exact same pain as you describe. It's driving me mad. Haven't slept right in days. Just this constant dull ache deep inside the joint. Stretching and activity doesn't help. I"m at my wits end.

Did you have a question that we could help you answer? I am not sure what exact pain you are experiencing, and it sounds awful that your dull ache is causing you to have sleepless nights.

Have you seen any health care providers, and have you read through the previous posts for information and resources?

Hello Kelly - I'm sorry to hear that you and your nine year old are experiencing hip pain. It's difficult to provide advice from the information you've given. Have you sought medical treatment or gotten any kind of diagnosis? Have you read through the earlier posts on this topic and tried any of the recommendations? Are you open to solutions other than medication? Look forward to hearing back from you - the more we understand what you're dealing with the more we can help.
Take good care,
Pat

I have very similar symptoms to the original post; severe hip/glute pain, very deep, wakes me up about 3 in the morning and I can't get back to sleep. I have been to the chiro and it is NOT arthritis, or any other bone or even back issue. She says it is muscular. I have had lots of therapy with her with very little improvement (electrical stim does seem to help some). I don't sit much during the day, but I am not athletic and don't get much exercise. Probably, good stretching in the evening and morning would help a lot. I haven't done it long enough to prove any long-term improvement, though.

It sounds like you need to see a physical therapist, not your chiro. While my chiro stretches me out very well, she also works in tandem with my physical therapist (he's a patient of hers, too).

Is there something that keeps you from exercising? Can you get out for a short daily walk?

I have a pain in my right hamstring where my leg attaches to glutes. If i stretch it, there is a popping noise like my hamstring pops. I have done this so much to relieve the pain that now, the pain wakes me up at night. Sometimes it bothers me in the day but not like at night. When i wake up i stretch it and do some resisting moves against the matress etc and the pain goes away. I think maybe it could be arthritis or bursitis or something. sometimes the pain goes more down in my leg an my back but it is more prominent in my leg and hip.
