Q:

Hip pain in middle of the night; dull ache that wakes me up. What could it be?

I am in my mid-30s, and have recently been having pain in my hips in the middle of the night. It reminds me of the RLS (restless leg syndrome) commercials, although I do not have any of these symptoms (no needle-sensation, no crawling-sensation). It is a dull ache, and I try to move my hips and legs around to get rid of the pain (it feels like it is deep inside, not a muscle or bone), but moving it seems to irritate it a little more. It is actually not on my hip bone, but closer to the middle of my "gluteus maximus" on each side. It's been happening the past few weeks, always around 2am or 3am and wakes me up.

I've been taking some ibuprofen, and eventually falling back asleep, but would rather not have to keep taking medication.

When I was pregnant with my child 3 years ago, I had a real problem with my sciatic (spelling?) nerve in my hips. Feels similar, but not the same.

Any suggestions?

I am 46 and I have the exact same problem.I use to exercise regularly and started having knee pain and stopped suddenly.I am 5'7 and weigh 155lbs.I thought the sudden lack of exercise was causing joint and muscle spasm but that is not the case. I have always had back pain after heavy lifting and a touch of what i considered to be sciatica
(undiagnosed). This pain is during the day lower achy back pain knee pain and stiffness in the knees.I cant squat down and get up well now without pain and weakness and using my arms. sleep is impossible! I have to change position constantly to stay ahead of the deep aching pain that radiates from my mid lower back down my leg. mostly on the left side but not exclusive to it. my right side aches too and thats the worst knee. to add to it recently my left shoulder has joined the mix by a dead feeling when I lay on it for to long. Also my bladder aches when its full and I cant eliminated it fully every time I pee. so... i have to get up more often to pee. I saw a rhumetologist who did exray and said i have only mild arthritis not bad for my age. refered to physical therapy i was told it was tight IT bands which i agree the stretching does help some but tons of money later im still screwed up! can anyone out there help?

Me too! the pain only comes at night and wakes me sweating, I have avoided pain killers but decided to search on line to see what it could be. I am amazed to find other ladies with the same thing. I'm 45 exercise regularly and have a healthy life style and no other problems. The hip/leg doesnt hurt during the day and I dont have restricted movement (although I feel like I've run a marathon this morning) after a bad night. Any clues on causes????

Oh my goodness! I am excited to know that other females are haveing the same symptoms! You have exactly the what I've been describing to my PCP. He suggested that I see a back doctor. This pain happens at night and it's in my right leg and hip. It is getting worst. I can't sleep at all with it. I have tried the heating pad and also Tylenol Arthritis. The heating pad did help but the Tylenol only ease it a little. Please if any of you have discovered what this is, let me know. I am going to make an appointment with an orthopedic doctor very soon today!

Hi, I have just been for an x ray as my doctor thinks I possibly have arthritis.

My symptoms are exactly as you describe and ive had RLS (restless leg syndrome) for a few years. My dull ache is in my hip/top of my leg area and has progressively got worse over the last 10 months to the stage when in bed i cant sleep from it.

Did you ever see the Orthopedic Doctor and get a diagnosis ?

Hi,
I described this problem to a friend of mine who is in her late 70's. She told me to use an eggcrate foam mattress piece on the bed (you can get these at Target or Walmart) and it would help. Not only did it help, but the pain disappeared completely.
I believe it had something to do with nerves and the eggcrate foam took the pressure off. I have also experienced this relief with a memory foam matteress. Hope this helps.

Hi i have been getting the same pain for last two years and neurologist / pain specialist told me i have L4-L5 damage where the sciatic nerve is getting pinched in this area which runs downthrough my buttocks and down my legs making my feet numb i get 3 monthly facet joint steroidal injectionals in the L4L5 area which helps alot but weight loss helps too. I was on oxycontin, gabapentin, endone, and many other muscle relaxants for two years which i am slowly reducing . The pain at night was unbelievable the worst ever i was getting no sleep and begging my hubby to help me end it all but it may take a good doctor to find your problem area hope they do. I also had hip bursitis both hip which makes it impossible to sleep on your side good luck
