How accurate is estimated GFR?

My creatinine is a mere 1.4 (1.3 is now the uppermost normal) but my GFR is 39. I once did an overnight catch and the "real" GFR matched the estimated. And I don't see how they can measure your GFR with a live catch if they don't know how much liquid you took in.
