Hi Anon

It's a good idea to take a pregnancy test, especially since you are late and have been having unprotected sex.

Good luck!

my period is very irregular, it never comes around the same time, last month it came on the 12 of august, i had sex with my boyfriend on the 9 of september, and i still have not had my period. i usually can tell when my period is coming because i get awful cramps, i feel nothing and im freaking out because i dont know what to do, should i take a pregnancy test?

I agree that the chances of your period being late is more likely than you being pregnant since you did say you are irregular. If I am at your position, I should wait for a week more to get a pregnancy test although that might be a lot easier said than done because of the way our minds play tricks on us when our cycle is not showing any signs of ever coming.

Hi, Anon,

I can understand why you would be worried, but it's very possible that you're just late. If your last period came on August 12th, you are still just a few days late today. Since you say your periods are irregular, it makes me think that you're just having a particularly long cycle. But taking a pregnancy test might help ease your mind. Were you having unprotected sex during late August? That is most likely when you would have been ovulating (not as late as September 9).

Hi Anon

You calculate your cycle from the first day of your period - so when you get your period, that's day 1. Your cycle ends the next time you have your period (which obviously is day 1 again).

If you are always a 26 day cycle, then you are a few days late by now but still very much in the average cycle of most women which is anywhere from 21 days to 32 days or thereabouts. Everyone is different.

It sounds like you are about to get your period! But if you are not using any kind of protection, then pregnancy is always a factor so if you don't get your period in the next few days, take a test to rule that out.

Are you currently trying to get pregnant?

Hi, Anon, and welcome to EmpowHer. I'm glad you found us, and thank you for your question!

You say your boyfriend hadn't ejaculated yet when the condom broke. That's a good thing. I assume you immediately either stopped what you were doing and replaced the condom?

There is a chance you could be pregnant if any of your boyfriend's pre-ejaculate escaped into your vagina. But it seems like it was quite late in your cycle. Here's how the dates look if your cycle is normally 28 days long:

Last period:
June 8th (that's Day 1)
Probable ovulation: Somewhere between June 15-25
Unprotected sex: July 1
Expected period (for a 28-day cycle): July 5-6

From those days, for you to get pregnant you would have had to be ovulating on day 24 of your cycle, which is very unlikely. My guess is that your trip, the separation from your boyfriend, the stress of the month, the travel, and then reuniting with him has been so much stress that you're just really late. Stress can make us go one week late, two weeks late, even miss a period. Stress messes with our hormones -- even if we are normally very regular -- and the next thing we know, we're off schedule.

Most home pregnancy tests are set up to measure HCG, a hormone that's present in the urine of pregnant women. They generally say that they are accurate within one to five days of a missed period. However, for you, if July 1 was the only day you had unprotected sex, and if you did get pregnant then, I would wait at least another week to try a HPT.

I'm sorta betting you'll get your period by then anyway. Please come back and update us! My fingers are crossed for you.
