Hello. Am so sorry to hear about your gallstones pain. My daughter was diagnosed of gallstones also but before she was diagnosed, never had attack like the one you suffer every night. She occassionally had gastric pain and sometimes vomit after fatty meal, so we thought that she was hyperacidic.Only after her blood test doc suspected of liver disease as her bilirubin was high and her AST and ALT were 10 times higher than normal. Sonography showed that she has small but plenty gallstones. An MRCP showed a more detailed image, unfortunately 2 smal stones obstructed her common bile duct. Actually, a day after MRCP , she had an attack which was so heart breaking to witness. Her gastroenterologist did EUS on her, fortunately, he saw nothing in the CBD. A miracle indeed ! Seems that the severe pain was due to the stones passing the CBD towards her intestines. After this, she was relieved of pain and the invasive MRCP procedure to be done was cancelled. Now, she is waiting for 1 week more to be admitted to hosp. and have her gall bladder removed.

My point is, do not try to ignore the pain you are having. Make sure you have MRCP to see the status of the gall bladder, pancreas and liver.Obstruction of stones in the CBD is very painful and could be a critical condition.Flushing are not effective if the stones are already big or many. There is also this danger that the more you wait, chances are the stones may fall into the CBD which could be very ,very painful. If your stones are safe in the gallbladder, schedule for surgery ASAP.Eating healthy diet prevents more stones to form, but you have to remove the stones already present and that is only thru removal of the gallbladder. Medicines that reduce the size of the stones may take 2-3 years to finally dissolve them but you gall bladder may produce stones again after 3-4 years .

My daughter has been diagnosed to have small but plenty gallstones She doesn't smoke nor drink but a bit over weight. But for the past 7 years she over indulged with fats foods being a student abroad. She has had history of "hyper acidity" , a few vomiting , sensitivity to fatty food and having mild pain below her right rib. We thought that she was just hyperacidic so even her doc gave only the lansoprazole and metronidazole medications . Another doc has advised for blood test and that was the time they found out that she has a very high SGT and ALT, bilirubin direct in her blood. She was advised to have Sonography which showed the image of stones in her gallbladder ,but doc advised to have a further MRCP and unfortunately showed 2 size 3mm stones obstructing her CBD. So she must have the ERCP , but her doc suggest to have EUS first so he can be sure of the location of the stones. Blood test was done 3 days before ,showed high Amylase and GGT. During the EUS, doc didn't find the stones in her CBD anymore. Thanks God . So was advised for another blood test .I hope that she won't be needing the ERCP anymore since her CBD is now clear. But one thing for sure is she has to have the laparoscopic removal of the gall bladder.

Pls do not ignore gallstones as the pain is unbearable when they obstruct the CBD and could be life threatening also . Removal of the gallbladder also should be done after MRCP,the EUS and ERCP .This is to avoid neglecting any stone in the bile duct after surgery which may cause infection and a repeat operation.

Have to follow strict low fat diet before and after.

I have been experiencing sharp pains under my right rib randomly for the past year, every month or so I suffer from bad thrush and have problems passing stools and I get an infection around my pereneam, which affects my sex life. Passing stools hurt and scratch as they go through causing a bit of bleeding , this is 6 weekly pattern and after reading your excellent posts I'm wondering if I'm suffering from gallstones.

I'm slim and fit with 2 children age 4 and 6 and Im nearly 40

I did have an ultra sound which found a single gallstone... So I am considering going back to the doctors to find out but I am quiet worried it will come back as they can do that, I am on the pill which is supposedly a cause and It also could have been hereditary but my doctor wasn't too helpful about what could have caused it ect......
If my gallstone did pass will it leave any infection in my other organs? x

Im 19, size uk 6 dress size, none smoker/ drinker and I was recently diagnosed with gallstones and pancreatits after having a HUGE attack and my partner took me to hospital back in September 2010 , I had such a rough time, I had never felt such a pain I literally thought I was going to DIE and I didn't get the help I needed, they said you''ll have an op in 6-8wks and if you don't you will die :/ I didn't hear back! I tried with the doctors to try and get hold ect... I gave up!! I was in so much pain, being sick, fainting and restlessness and just not feeling right in my self, Eventually I lived with it and cut out certain things such as pizza and ate more garlic and olive oil with foods as they 'purify' I even take Aloe Vera (YUUUCK!) and I feel so much better.... The other day though I had a poo and there was a little blood and I felt a moving lump in my lower left tummy and It hurt to touch but after a day it was gone and then there was no blood or pain and I assume I may have passed my gallstone?? Can any one shed some light please?? Dani x

Anon - You said you've not been given information about gallstones except to not eat fatty foods or dairy. You can find more information about what causes them, the treatments, and other things you can do to help with this from our Gallstones section at https://www.empowher.com/condition/gallstones

If you are not a candidate for surgery then you may also want to seek support from a healthcare professional who treats patients with natural alternatives.

Good luck!

Hi Anonymous

I don't think there is a natural way to dissolve gallstones. If they are small they can pass through the bile duct but when they are larger they cannot and must be removed surgically. There can be serious health repercussions to ignoring gallstones.

Your liver makes bile and it is stored in your gallbladder. When you eat fatty food, your gallbladder squirts out bile to help digest the fat. If a stone is in the bile duct, your gallbladder tries to squirt and it can't. You get that colicky feeling along with pain and nausea. If the duct is completely blocked, that bile stays in the gallbladder, then the liver can't keep putting bile in there, then your liver values rise as well. In addition you get the diarrhea because you can't digest fats.

So you have to avoid fats. Pretty much all fats. It can get to the point where it is really difficult to eat. You can end up with a very bad gallbladder, including infection. It can make you quite ill. I would wonder why surgery hasn't been suggested for you.

When my gallbladder was bad, it got to the point where all I could do was drink Slim Fast. I couldn't eat anything without getting sick. My sister's gallbladder became necrotic and had to be removed emergently. What I'm saying is, it is not something to ignore.

If we can help further, please let us know.
