Hello Anonymous,

The most common type of uterine cancer starts in the endometrium, which is the lining of the uterus. Uterine cancer usually occurs after menopause.

The exact cause of uterine cancer is unknown. What is known is that something occurs to create a genetic mutation within cells in the endometrium.

Risk factors include an increased level of estrogen in your body, starting menstruation before the age of 12 or beginning menopause later, never having been pregnant, being older, receiving the hormone therapy drug tamoxifen for breast cancer, and an inherited colon cancer syndrome called hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer.

The grade of uterine cancer includes a description of the type of cells found in a biopsy or sample of uterine tissue. The higher the grade, the more abnormal appearing are the cancer cells.
Grade 1--low
Grade 2--intermediate
Grade 3--high

Staging denotes the extent of the cancer.
Stage 1 cancer is found only in your uterus
Stage 2 cancer is present in both the uterus and cervix
Stage 3 cancer has spread beyond the uterus, but has not reached the rectum and bladder. The pelvic area lymph nodes may be involved
Stage 4 cancer has spread past the pelvic region and can affect the bladder, rectum and more distant parts of your body.

Generally, the lower the stage, the better the prognosis.

To reduce your risk of uterine cancer, consider the benefits and risk of hormone replacement therapy, consider taking birth control pills for at least one year, maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly.

Having a strong support system of family and friend can help your relative cope with treatment.

I hope this information is helpful.
