Thank you for your question. Runners Knee often occurs when runners overuse their muscles and of course this is a repetitive motion. I found a great article from Runners World for you that will help you better understand how and why Runners Knee occurs. You can read the full article here http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-241-285—7773-0,00.html.

To sum it up, you must provide your knee rest. Returning to running without proper preparation will continue to injure your knee and may cause further problems later. The proper way to answer your question, is your body will tell you when it is time. The above article provides great information on how your hamstring and calf muscles are key to the pressure absorbed to your knee. The proper shoes are necessary also. Have you seen your physician? What did he/she say about your injury?

Are you wearing any supportive devices such as knee braces while you are running?

I hope the above information helps you. You know your body well and you will certainly know when your body has healed by the way you feel.

Since you are only three days from your injury, I would certainly give yourself some time. Here is another website that specifically gives you treatment options that you can do at home including icing the area. http://www.time-to-run.com/injuries/thebig5/runnersknee.htm
