My friend was told that she had level 31 HPV. What is level 31 HPV? is it cancer or close to caner. Her doctor wants her to come in for a shot. Will the shot cause it to go away or what. Will she be able to live a normal life after getting the shot, will eventually develop cancer?

Hi Anonymous,
Thank you for your question. HPV 31 is one of the strands of HPV which is known to cause cervical cancer in women. You indicated that her physician would like her to get the shot? What shot are you talking about?

HPV is extremely common and in many cases, HPV will go away on its own. There are those cases in which some may turn into cancer but the statistics are actually pretty low. How old is your friend? Once infected, medical monitoring is essential to watch for abnormalities in PAP tests which will provide a better indication if there will be possible cancer in the future.

Remember that there are MILLIONS of people who are infected with HPV and live completely normal lives. Education and monitoring will be beneficial for your friend. Please check out of our informational site regarding HPV and another website from the Center of Disease Control for more information.
