I didn't know where I was

Yesterday I was driving to a friends place for my weekly voice lessons and all of a sudden I had no idea where I was. I knew I was going to my friends place, but I didn't know if I was still on the right highway, where on the highway I was, nothing looked familiar. I looked to the sides of the road and ahead and I didn't see anything I recognized. I didn't know if I had passed the place to where I was going, or if it was still coming up. It was terrifying. This has never happened to me before.

Amber,

I have actually experienced what you did a couple of times in the past. For me, it was that I totally was not paying attention to the road -- at ALL -- and I'd missed a turn, or driven past the exit, or something else similar. All of a sudden it was like the Twilight Zone -- I could have been in another state for all I knew.

In those cases, though, I was doing what Alison said -- I was totally preoccupied, zoned out, just not in the moment at all. And when I started paying attention again, I didn't know where I was. Feeling lost in a moment like that can be extremely frustrating and even frightening. Especially at night.

Do get back to us and let us know if you think it might have been this that happened? Or something more?

And Alison's questions are good ones. Can you get back to us with the answers?

Hi Amber,
This does sound frightening to be in that situation!

I am assuming it was more than just being "preoccupied" (with music, talking on the cell phone), as many drivers have said that they "don't remember driving home" when referring to a daily commute that is familiar and they kind of "tune out" the details of the road, scenery, etc.

Can you confirm that this is not what you are referring to, so I can look into other possible options? I just want to make sure that you were not preoccupied with music, cell phone, other passengers, daydreaming, etc.

Are you on any medications?
Do you have any medical conditions?
How old are you?

Hope to hear back from you soon!
