I'm almost 40, and generally have a very regular cycle, but if anything, I may be a couple of days late once in a while. I've never been early like this - more than a week before I expected it. I also just recently became sexually active again, after a long hiatus. Would a change like going from NO sex to LOTS of sex be enough to trigger a hormonal response that would cause an early period? I'll also note that I am using condoms, and both of us have recently tested totally clean. I'm considering an IUD, but not totally sold on it. I'm really sensitive to birth control hormones, so I feel like there aren't any great options.
I've read a few things that list a bunch of reasons for a super early period, and I'm not young, not generally irregular, not likely starting menopause (!hope not) and haven't had any stress or big life events that would cause my system to go haywire, so I'm scratching my head and really trying to pick a better alternative than 'early miscarriage'. We've been very careful to stay safe - but if it's that easy to have a condom fail, then I don't feel so safe after all.

Hi anon and thanks for your question.
Sex itself would not cause your period to start, but sex can cause bleeding. Is it possible that this was not your period, but rather some post-coital bleeding?
Your menstrual cycle is regulated by your hormones, and sex will not instantly alter them.
