Hi Anon,

Thank you for sharing your health question with the EmpowHER community! That is great you are talking to your doctor about the best option for PCOS, but are still keeping your liver disease in mind too.

When you say combined contraceptive, do you mean you are taking a birth control pill?

Taking birth control pills can affect your liver disease negatively. I would suggest not taking the pill as a birth control option or to help with your PCOS, because it can have affects on the liver (especially if you have liver disease.)

However, there are some different options of treatment for your PCOS that you can consider. Some options include:

  • Exercising on a regular basis
  • Insulin resistance and prediabetes management
  • Oral contraceptive
  • Anti-androgenic medications
  • Eating healthy foods and sticking to a low-fat diet

I would also mention to your doctor that you are concerned about taking the pill due to your liver disease. They should be able to talk about other treatment options for PCOS that won't interfere with your liver disease. Here is a resource on EmpowHER that talks about treatments for PCOS: https://www.empowher.com/condition/polycystic-ovarian-syndrome/treatments.

Here is a personal story from an EmpowHER user that may be interesting to you. It talks about the impact birth control pills had on her liver disease: https://www.empowher.com/community/share/my-liver-disease-story-birth-control-pill.

I hope this helped! Please keep me updated and let me know if you have further questions.

Best,
Erin

Erin, am very much grateful for your information. it has really being a source of help to me. I discussed with my doctor and he has advised me not to take it since it will cause more damage to me. i was taking a drug called M2 TONE and HYPONID for the treatment. He has now asked me to continue taking it till i have an appointment with him in November. Thank you so much.
