Q:

I have been having 3week-1 month long periods w/ large clots. What could be causing the length and clots? Should I worry?

I'm Having Menstrual Bleeding for 3 Weeks. What's the cause?

I'm 29 yrs. old and I've been having my menstrual cycle for 3 weeks to 1 month with about a 2 week break between each period. Along with my period I have huge clots. This has been happening since I had my daughter in 2006. I saw a doctor about it and he just put me on birth control pills to try and regulate it, but that just caused me to have blood clots in my lungs. I went on Coumadin and my period was normal while I was on the meds. Now I'm off Coumadin and my period went back to being long again and with the huge clots. Is there something my doctors should be testing for? Why am I having a 3 week menstrual cycle? Can this cause complications with conceiving again? What is wrong with my cycle?

Hello Anonymous,

I cannot speak for your gynecologist's office. Have you let a message? Have you actually spoken to someone?

You do need to be seen. Prolonged bleeding can lead to blood loss that puts you at risk for iron deficiency anemia.

Maryann

I am going through the same thing. Bled for 2 to 3 weeks, off for 2 to 3 weeks, then it starts again. Ive been going through this for a year now and no matter what type of birth control i take it continues. I am so frustrated bc my obgyn days oh this will help, ok try this birth control. I have never gotten a straight answer to this problem yet and im really starting to get frustrated and depressed. Im 33 years old. I feel I'm old enough to be able to look at a dr and say HEY! THIS ISN'T NORMAL! Bc its not! Does anybody have any idea what, why, and what exact type of Dr i should seek? Any clue as to if this is a disorder, something i should worry about?

I have been bleeding for 3 our of 4 weeks for 15 years. It started when I was 19 and now I am 34. I've spent countless hours seeing doctors from every practice of medicine and researching anything I could get my hands on. I've been on and off every pill on the market with none of them helping at all. Acupuncture, natropathic, holistic, western medicine, nutrition, etc. No one seems to have a REAL answer or a REAL solution. If you ladies come across anything that actually solves this mystery, I'd LOVE to hear it. Until then, power on!

Hello Anonymous,

I can hear your frustration. You deserve to have an answer.
Because the menstrual cycle is regulated by a balance of hormones, I am just wondering if you should be seen by an endocrinologist.

Another option, if you live near a large city or a university with a medical school, look for a gynecologist who specializes in reproductive hormonal issues.

Your description is identical to mine. Even down to the age! I don't know what to do. The doctor put me on birth control, but now I can't get it. I am back to the same thing. I can't live my life because it's interfering. I wish I had some advice, but I need help just as badly as you do.

I've had my period for about 3 weeks now Monday was the 3 week mark and I still haven't stopped bleeding. My boyfriend and I had sex on the 8th and I started having a brown discharge on the 11th and it went all the way til my actual period date which was the 17th and it went on like a normal period but at the end of it it started to stop and then come back again and then now it's just been a regular period and I haven't stopped. It gets heavy and then it'll get light like it's gonna stop and then it'll be heavy again. Anyone else have this problem?

I'm 34 yrs. old And like you I have been dealing with the same issues that you have been. it started back in December and has only gotten worse. I went to my dr. in march ran some test and did a transvaginal ultrasound and everything came back normal. so they put me on birth control. It helped the first month but that's it!! so since april I have periods that last 2-3 weeks and I'm crampy and tired and I get headaches. my period will slow down like its gonna stop or it does for a few days then it starts right back up again. I am very worried and so is my husband. He has been great, supportive and understanding. But I am just done with this!! I want to feel normal again, I want to stop worring what could be wrong. I finally made another dr. appointment for this Friday. I am hoping that I can get some answers. and if I do I will leave a post. I wish all of the ladies out there who have to deal with this Luck!!
