I have read a few things that maybe the condition could be an ADD or ADHD issue, but I do not have any of the other symptoms. I talked with a retired Speech Therapist and she did agree that excessive sound in small rooms was very much a distraction to A.D.D sufferers. I read some other stories on the web earlier when I googled it and they suffer just like I do. It affects my work and private life and I want to see if there are answers as to how to treat or deal with this problem.

Hi, Anon:

I had tinnitus as a kid and it drove me crazy. The older I got, though, my hearing was affected by constant sinus infections and perennial allergies. But, I'm still sensitive to noise. As far as I know, I do not have ADD/ADHD (although I'm sure the nuns at my schools would have disagreed).

Have you ever been diagnosed with tinnitus or a magnesium deficiency?

Hi, I will start taking magnesium and see if that makes a difference. My Doctor has suggested it for months now for other reasons. I will let you know.
Thank you

I also get really annoyed by loud chomping, and I've been known to be really strict with my kids about keeping their mouths closed when they chew. It doesn't matter how loud the background noise is (ie: TV, music, etc.), I can always hear someone near me who is chomping. To me, it's like someone dragging their nails across a blackboard, only ten times worse.

I know I don't have the symptoms involved with ADD or ADHD, however I do have Tourette's Syndrome (I have only mild facial tics). I wonder if sensitive hearing could be related to a neurological disorder such as Tourette's....

Anon, I'm glad you brought this up because I thought I was the only person in the world who was annoyed by chewing noises!! It's nice not to be alone. :)

What's tinnitus?

Hi,
Well I know I do not have tinnitus....I looked it up :generally a symptom of something wrong in your auditory system. The dictionary defines tinnitus as the sensation of noise, often ringing or roaring, in your ears that comes from inside your head in the absence of any external sound.
What is irritating me are chewing noises that are real and being done by those around me...

I have been annoyed with chewing noises, they don't have to be loud if I can hear it, it annoys me. I plug an ear in class to try to drain out some of the noise but it just distracts me like no tomorrow. I'm known to blow up at family members who eat around me and I know they can't help it and I know I make noise when I eat but I only can counter it by eating but that doesn't always work. and its not just food its like pen clicking, typing keys, shuffling of a leg. Also its not just auditory it also has to do with like if someone is shaking their leg or something that I can see rocking or anything. though sight is easier to tune out in the sense i can block my vision to not see it in class. But its not just class its other places as well. . . and sometimes I am more sensitive than others.

OMG!! The shaking of the leg irritates me too.... almost as much as the loud chewing! I am now in a office by myself, I do not have to listen or watch anyone. It is lonely but the trade off is worth it.
