I have a severe morphine and oxicodone allergy. I am also allergic to several NSAIDS and most over-the-counter NSAIDS, while producing no allergy symptoms do not provide pain relief. I am having surgery and they want to use a drug call Tramadol which has Tylenol in it's formula. I've never gotten pain relief from Tylenol. I copied the article which states there are 3 different classes of opiods. If I am allergic to the ones in the phenanthrene class, can I take a drug from the other two groups and not have an allergic reaction such as swelling and/or severe pustules and itching?

Hi Anonymous -
Thanks for your question. There is no way that we can determine if you will have an allergic reaction to a drug. It would be best to discuss this with your doctor and you may also want to include a pharmacist in the discussion. They will have insight based on your medical condition, past experiences and their knowledge of the drugs. They may also want to do some tests, such as taking small does of a drug in advance of your surgery, to determine what you can tolerate. You are smart to be looking into this, and they should help you in exploring it further to be safe during your surgery and recovery period. Hope that is helpful and you get the answers you need.
Best,
Pat
