Q:

I just came home from an ultra sound of my right breast, I was told it was an inflamed lymph node. Is this something I should consider getting a second opinion? I am more worried after I actually seen the questionable area on film!

Hello Anonymous,

I can appreciate your concern. Personally, I do not think seeking a second opinion is necessary, unless you feel strongly otherwise.

You should have a follow up appointment with your doctor. This would be an excellent opportunity to discuss the findings, possible causes of the inflammation, and treatment plan.

Lymph nodes are small glands found throughout the body and are part of the lymph system, which carries lymph fluid, nutrients, and waste material between the body tissues and the bloodstream.

In the breast area, there are lymph nodes called axillary lymph nodes which are located in the armpit, and intramammary lymph nodes which are within the breast tissue.

Inflammation or swelling of a lymph node is the result of infection, injury or cancer.

Maryann
