I'm taking up Diane 35 and I missed 1 pill in week 1 (5th day) but took it right away at same time as the next pill. My problem is that I had sex the night I missed the pill. What are the possibilities of getting pregnant?

Anon,

Well done -- you did exactly what you were supposed to do in taking it your missed pill as soon as you remembered it. Your protection should have been uninterrupted and you should be fine.

Have you been taking your birth control pill regularly for months prior to your 1 missed pill (which you took as soon as you remembered)?

The effectiveness rate for pills when used consistently and correctly each and every time are 99% a year (meaning chance of pregnancy is 1% or less each year). This effectiveness rate drops whenever you miss a pill.

Missing 1 pill (and taking it the next day) is not a big concern; missing 3 or more is when this effectiveness rate drops considerably. Next time, be sure to have condoms available as a backup method, and to prevent against STDs/STIs.

I've been taking-up Diane 35 for 4 months now as a cure to my acne problem and since its dual purpose (birth control pill), being married and mom to 3 kids, its really a big relief for me to know that there's nothing to worry about if I missed 1 pill in week 1.

Thank you Ms. Alison.
