Q:

I noticed recently that when I wake up and/or get up from sitting a while my feet hurt. It is painful to walk for a little bit. Is this my joints? I bought a joint supplement but remembering to take FOUR BIG pills is difficult. Will this help?

Hello beefunk,

Welcome to the EmpowHER community and thank you for reaching out to us. Your joints may not be the source of this pain.

How old are you? How much do you weigh? Do you have any medical conditions? Is the pain localized in the heels or does your entire foot hurt?

Do you have any other symptoms, such as numbness or tingling in your feet? It is painful to walk only for a short time or all the time?

Consider scheduling an appointment with your primary care physician.

Generally speaking, if the pain is under your heel bone it is likely plantar fasciitis. Pain in the foot when you get out of bed and when you stand after sitting for a while is a classic symptom of plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a thick band that runs along the bottom of the foot from the heel to the ball of the foot. It helps support the arch of the foot.

If the pain is found at the back of the heel, in the achilles or toward the base of the achilles (the long cord that extends from your calf to your heel bone), then it is likely achilles tendinitis.

I hope this information is helpful.
