Q:

I took my 3rd pill in the pack around 2-3 hours late. Should I use a backup method?

I usually take it at 8 am but i somehow missed my alarm and didnt realize i hadnt taken it until around 10:30 or so. I know it is the first week of my pack. I am on the combination pill, and until today I took all of the pills on time. Is it safe for me to engage in unprotected sex, or should I use a back up method? Will pulling out suffice in this case?

Guide

Hi Anon,

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community.

Since you technically didn't miss a day, using a back up birth control method is not necessary. However, if you have just started taking birth control pills, or have only been taking them for less than 4 months, I would advise in using back up birth control (condom or pull out method).

Good job on being proactive!

Be well,
