Q:

I took Plan B last month...

Twice. Both times were the day after having sex (the condom broke). Everything went fine that month in regards to my period...the only thing was that I got it a week early, but the bleeding was normal, as well as the duration. However, this month I've been very careful with being protected during sex but my period is over a week late. Last month I got it on June 8th. I was thinking, though, that that could have been an effect from the Plan B pills (getting it a week early)...so now I'm wondering whether I should be expecting my period at the same time this month (July 8th) or if I should be expecting it at the date I usually get it (before I took plan B...16th/17th). Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Hi Alison,
Thanks so much for your response. I plan on waiting, as you said, a few days past the 17th to see if anything happens. I'm pretty sure the cause of this late period is most likely effects from Plan B... as well as a lot of stress, and I can definitely say I have been extremely cautious in protecting myself since the condoms broke last month. About that... I'm still unsure as to why they broke, but it happened twice, which is pretty strange. I guess we somehow must have been doing something wrong because it hasn't happened anymore since then. Once again, thanks a bunch for your comment and I'll definitely update on what happens!

Hi,
I know...it is so frustrating that when you REALLY need to know that your period is going to begin, it is irregular.

You are right in suspecting that Plan B could be the culprit to your late period. Unfortunately, no one can even guess at what time your next period will begin, as Plan B can cause your cycles to be irregular for a cycle or two. You could have an early period one month, a late period the next month...no one knows, and there is no formula from which to even speculate.

Your reasoning is good, with expecting your period to start sometime between July 8th and July 17th. I know it's difficult, but wait a few more days past the 17th, and if your period still has not started, you can take a home pregnancy test. It sounds like you have been having protected intercourse since your last period, so your chances of pregnancy should be very slight.

Let us know if you would like to talk about the condom breaking twice, as condoms should not break...it is actually from user error most likely. Just a few quick tips: use lubrication on the outside of the condom, and make sure there is space left at the tip.

Let us know what you decide to do!
