I'm sorry you are scared. Did you just receive the results of your pap smear, and was told it was abnormal? This is the best brochure I have seen that describes the different types of abnormal pap test results: Understanding Abnormal Pap Test Results from ACOG.
What type of abnormal pap test did your doctor say that you have, and what where the next steps s/he recommended for you? (If you were not given this information, call back and ask!)

When you were diagnosed with dysplasia 3 years ago, which type was it out of the three categories:
* CIN I -- mild dysplasia (a few cells are abnormal)
* CIN II -- moderate to marked dysplasia
* CIN III -- severe dysplasia to carcinoma-in-situ (precancerous cells only in the top layer of the cervix)

Please know (I am surprised you did not know this already from your doctor!): THERE ARE USUALLY NO SYMPTOMS FROM DYSPLASIA. Waiting until you have symptoms is never a good idea when you are diagnosed with something that is precancerous; that is exactly when you want to seek treatment before it becomes something more serious and irreversible.

Please remember that cervical dysplasia is treatable, and the sooner you seek treatment, the better. What has been the reason for waiting 3 years?

Your doctor can tell the cause of your abnormal pap smear results from performing a colposcopy, to determine what the condition is from (dysplasia or DNC), and at what severity.

Please keep us informed, and let us know about your test results.
