Q:

I was just wondering if you could tell me how long semen can survive outside of the human body?

My girlfriend is worried as some semen got on her hand and about 2-3 minutes, then she wiped her hand with a cloth and then she went to bathroom and cleaned her hand by cool water then she touched her vagina. So there is any chances of getting her pregnancy?

Guide

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. I am glad you reached out to our community with your question.

Basically, sperm can live outside the body for about 20 minutes. Once semen has dried, the sperm in it has died.

Washing her hands with soap and warm water would have been better. But, wiping with a cloth and rinsing should have removed any semen. There should not have been a risk for becoming pregnant.

Regards,
Maryann
